A breeding program, built deliberately.
Cattle are becoming the backbone of Cheshire Park. We're building an Angus herd around genetics, temperament and performance — not chasing size for its own sake.
Cheshire Park runs Angus cattle, and of everything on the farm, this is the enterprise we're most deliberate about. Angus suits the country here, suits the market, and suits the kind of farm we're trying to build — one where the cattle work is done properly rather than treated as a sideline.
We didn't start with a fully-formed breeding plan, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. What we started with was a paddock, a handful of cattle, and a growing interest in doing the genetics side properly rather than just letting nature sort it out. That interest has only gotten more serious since.
Temperament and performance, ahead of everything else.
We're breeding for cattle that are easy to handle, do well on this country, and hold their condition without being babied. Genetics is the tool we're using to get there — pedigree and figures matter to us, but only in service of producing better animals, not as an end in themselves.
It's early days for the program, and we're the first to say so. What's changed is the intent behind it: this is no longer a herd we're running by default, it's one we're actively building.
Bringing in the right bull, from the right place.
Karoo Angus is part of the Cheshire Park cattle story — it's where we found and bought Gene, the bull now doing the most important job on the property. Sourcing genetics from a program we trust was a deliberate step up in how seriously we're treating this side of the farm.
There's more to that story than fits on this page. We've written it up properly in the journal, including the trip to bring him home.
Built to grow into more than a page.
As the program matures, we plan to bring individual animal profiles, bloodlines and progeny information onto the site, along with details on stock for sale and how to make a genetics enquiry. None of that exists yet — we'd rather build it properly once there's a program worth showing in that kind of detail. If you're after any of it now, get in touch directly.
